Golden Triangle Planning and Development District is a regional organization which values the collection and application of geospatial data for use in local government operations, planning and development activities, and rural development. They have focused on the collection of base data such as streets, structure polygons, address points, and street-level photographs for the promotion of economic growth and development in Winston County, Mississippi. Such data collection has required a unique brand of ingenuity as local financial resources are extremely limited due to extreme poverty and while the benefits of using geospatial information technologies are generally agreed upon as a good idea, their true value was not necessarily realized until the area was struck by a massive EF-4 tornado on 28 April 2014. This webinar will focus on the value proposition for collecting and using geospatial data in rural communities, how geospatial technologies were applied in a life-saving manner immediately after the tornado struck, and their use to greatly enhance the filing of damage claims and aid the overall recovery effort.
