In Memory of Ronald Griffin

PSLS Life Member Ronald Griffin passed away on December 14th.  Ron joined PSLS in 1983 and became a Life Member in 2000. 

GRIFFIN – Ronald “Ron,” 102, Portage, Ind., formerly of Northern Cambria, died Dec. 14, 2015, at Brookdale Senior Living. Born Sept. 23, 1913, in Houtzdale, son of Joseph and Louise (Todhunter) Griffin. Preceded in death by parents; wife of 641/2 years, the former Dorothy E. Birchall, on Jan. 5, 2002; brothers, Paul and 3-year-old Melvin; sisters, LaRue Carlson and Delores Kuhn; grandchild, Melinda L. Vargo; and great-grandchildren, Brandon and Colby Vargo. Survived by daughter, Karen Diane Fleming, Griffith, Ind.; grandchildren, Michele L. Watters, Melissa L. and Ryan Sullivan and Michael Vargo; and great-grandchildren, Madeline, Gabrielle and Zackery Sullivan and Kera and Sean Watters. Brother of Betty Louise Griffin, Northern Cambria; and Clifford J. Griffin, and wife, Nancy, Wickliffe, Ohio. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Member of St. John’s United Methodist Church since 1929, where he taught Sunday school and was very active in all church activities. He was employed with Barnes and Tucker Co. for 50 years; retired as a mining engineer in 1982; received a coal mining instructor diploma in 1946 from Pennsylvania State College; taught first aid and mine supervision classes for 25 years for Barnes and Tucker Co.; and received a mine foreman, first grade certificate in 1949, professional engineer license. Member of American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers since 1968. He received professional land surveyor license and became a lifetime member of Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors in 2000. After retirement, he taught mine supervision classes for Inland Steel. Former member of North Barnesboro Cemetery Board. Ron wished to thank and have the following people acknowledged for their wonderful help over the years: Henry “Cooney” Caldwell, Jack Emerick, Galen Seese and Dennis Sheehan. Friends will be received from noon until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday at Long-Contres Funeral Homes Inc., Northern Cambria. Interment, North Barnesboro Cemetery.
