    PSLS YSN report

Thank you to the member of PSLS and the board of directors for your support of my attendance at the 3rd NSPS & FIG North American Meeting held in conjunction with the Maryland Society of Surveyors Fall Conference, and NSPS Fall Business Meeting, October 17-19, 2018 in College Park, MD.

More than 50 attendees represented 40 states across the US as well as Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Argentina, and Nigeria.

The meeting theme of ‘Plotting a Course for the Future’ was well presented across the various sessions. An emphasis on where the profession is heading and how the Young Surveyors will lead into the future was stressed throughout the meeting. Session topics ranged across Technology, Leadership, a Panel of Outsiders’ View of our Profession, and a Keynote by Dr. Dru Smith of NGS centered on the 2022 Datum.

On Thursday our delegation toured the US Capitol as a group. Hosted by former U.S. Representative, Daniel Maffei of NY, we were given a private tour of the U.S. House chamber which is not normally part of the public tours. A tour of the rotunda and old House and Senate chambers followed. After lunch together at the Capitol, our group dispersed to spend that afternoon touring the various monuments and museums of the DC National Mall area.

Friday, we reconvened at the conference center for various sessions in conjunction with the Maryland Society Conference. History of Surveying, Law, Business, and GNSS Technology were all covered and targeted to the Young Surveyors in the session track titled “Wow! I Wish Someone Told Me That Thirty Years Ago!”.

The next NSPS Young Surveyors meeting to be held April 2019, in conjunction with NSPS Spring business meeting in Arlington, VA.

Respectfully submitted October 30, 2018 Chris Jackson, PLS – PSLS YSN representative

    Mobile-Friendly PAMS Aids Surveying Community

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Photogrammetry & Surveys Section recently released a new publicly accessible, mobile-friendly web version of its Photogrammetry Job Tracking and Asset Management System (PAMS) web application. Through the mobile-friendly PAMS (, surveyors can use web-enabled smart phones and tablets to quickly look up and view map locations of permanent geodetic monuments installed and documented by PennDOT, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the National Geodetic Survey (NGS).

“We have always promoted unrestricted access to public records as our objective with PAMS,” said Bradley Foltz, PLS, CP, Chief of the Photogrammetry & Surveys Section. “PAMS has been embraced by the private sector surveying and engineering communities who routinely use the website to research geodetic monuments and aerial photography flight lines.”

This mobile-friendly version of PAMS will greatly enhance accessibility while surveyors are in the field. PennDOT’s vision is to partner with the surveying community to confirm the existence of geodetic monuments they visit and to document monument conditions. This collaborative partnership can help maintain critical survey infrastructure for future public/private photogrammetry and surveying projects.

geographIT®, a division of EBA Engineering, Inc., developed and hosts PAMS for PennDOT’s Photogrammetry & Surveys Section. The original system, developed and deployed into production in early 2000, has been continually enhanced and upgraded to adapt to the latest open source technology components.

Larry Elliott, 88, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018. He was currently living in Lewes, Del., but was a longtime resident of McMurray.

He was the beloved husband of 56 years to Jeri Vesely Elliott and loving father of Rod (Carolyn) Elliott of Lewes. Mr. Elliott was very proud of his grandchildren, Clara, Sylvie, Alodie and Nathaniel.

Mr. Elliott was preceded in death by his daughter, Teri Lynn; his parents, William and Harriet Elliott; and four siblings, William, Rodney, Jean and Nancy.

Following his service in the U.S. Army, Mr. Elliott and his brother, Rod, owned Elliott Surveying Inc. Years later, he opened his own company, Lawrence R. Elliott Surveying.

Mr. Elliott found time to devote a great deal of energy to supporting the Peters Township library, rotary and fire department. In fact, he was even named an honorary fireman.

Almost daily, he could be found at the local Eat 'n Park, enjoying the food and camaraderie. He loved to laugh, share a good joke and conversation and follow the Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Steelers. He also loved the game of golf. He appreciated kindness and valued friendship. Mr. Elliott was truly loved, and he will be missed and remembered.

Friends and family are welcome from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 17, in Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, 724-941-3211.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Peters Township Public Library.
