    Police are warning residents to be vigilant after an elderly couple was targeted in a distraction burglary last week in Carlisle, Pa. Investigators reported that two men pretending to be surveyors distracted the man while two accomplices entered his home and stole valuables. Police remind residents to ask for proper identification before allowing individuals onto their property, especially if their visit was unexpected. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 717-243-5252.

    David H. Widmer, P.L.S., accepted the position of NCEES president at the conclusion of the organization’s 93rd annual meeting, held August 20–23 in Seattle, Washington. Having completed a one-year term as president-elect,
    he will now serve as president for 2014–15.

    A resident of Rochester, Pennsylvania, Widmer was a member of the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists from 1991 to 2011 and is now an emeritus member. He is a past NCEES treasurer and Northeast Zone vice president. Widmer has been a licensed professional surveyor in Pennsylvania for almost 30 years. He is the president of consulting firm Widmer Engineering Inc., based in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Geneva College in Beaver Falls.

    Widmer has served as Southwest Chapter director and state director of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors, director of the Beaver County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, and president of the Western Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania. He is a former member of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Corporation Loan Advisory Committee, the board of directors
    for the Beaver County Association for the Blind, and the advisory board for the Beaver County Salvation Army.

    The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying is a nonprofit organization made up of engineering and surveying
    licensing boards from all U.S. states and territories. Since its founding in 1920, NCEES has been committed to advancing licensure for
    engineers and surveyors in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the U.S. public.

    NCEES helps its member licensing boards carry out their duties to regulate the professions of engineering and surveying. It develops
    best-practice models for state licensure laws and regulations and promotes uniformity among the states. It develops and administers
    the exams used for engineering and surveying licensure throughout the country. It also provides services to help licensed engineers and

    Congratulations to John G. Fuehrer II, PLS, PE, for Receiving the Earle J. Fennell Award!

    John G. Fuehrer II, PLS, PE, was honored with the Earle J. Fennell Award on Friday, August 1, during the PSLS Board of Directors meeting. NSPS Executive Director Curt Sumner attended to present the award, which NSPS bestows upon individuals who exhibit excellence in surveying and mapping education.

    John, president of Fuehrer Associates, Ltd., has been a dedicated member of PSLS for nearly 40 years. He is currently the chair of the PSLS Education Committee, state director of the PSLS Reading Chapter, member of the PLS Foundation, member of NSPS, and past president of PSLS (1996). On two occasions, he has received the Surveyor of the Year Award (1999 & 2007). John’s greatest impact on the Society stems from his steadfast commitment and leadership to the surveying profession. Under John’s direction, PSLS has become a leading provider of continuing education for Pennsylvania surveyors through its annual Surveyors Conference and popular monthly webinars.

    PSLS extends a round of applause to John and great thanks for his work in supporting the Society. PSLS is proud to have John as one of its outstanding leaders who is well-deserving of this prestigious award.

    About the Award
    In honor of Earle J. Fennell, ACSM President 1966-1967 and ACSM Executive Director 1968-1971, ACSM created this award to be presented for distinguished educational contributions to the surveying and mapping profession.

    Since the ACSM/NSPS merger, NSPS continues the tradition of this award. Persons who have worked in any aspect of surveying and mapping education may be nominated. The nominee may or may not be a professional educator but should have a sustained record of superior performance in surveying and mapping education for more than ten years at the local, state, or national level.

    PSLS Adopts Statement on Mapping and Positioning Services 

    On June 13, 2014, the PSLS Board of Directors approved the Statement on Mapping and Positioning Services drafted by the Geospatial Committee. An excerpt from the statement begins,
    "The Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors position is that activities referred to, but not limited to, as mapping, field inventory, or asset management performed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania without the direct supervision of an individual licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor or Professional Engineer by the Commonwealth are in violation of the Engineer, Land Surveyor and Geologist Registration Law..."
