After months of anticipation, Trimble Catalyst — a high-accuracy, on-demand positioning-as-a-service for Android devices — is hitting the market today worldwide, so I wanted to make sure you received the news directly. Here’s a link to the press release that went out today:

What is Catalyst? Trimble Catalyst transforms consumer devices into centimeter-accurate mobile geo-data collection systems, and it is available for purchase for the first time today through Trimble’s global distribution network.

Why is this important? Catalyst kicks off a new era of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology by making professional-grade positioning easily accessible to a broader base of users. Catalyst is revolutionary because of its flexibility. By reducing reliance on hardware for high-accuracy positioning, customers can use it on demand rather than spend money on hardware that often sits unused. Here’s a one-minute demo:

On March 12, 2014, an increase in License Renewal Fees was requested by the Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists in order to cover the deficit in operating expenses.  According to the Depart of State’s Bureau of Finance and Operations (BFO), a review of the revenue and expenses showed the board having a deficit of $660,000 at the end of fiscal year 2012-13.  The deficit is projected to increase to $2,270.000 by 2026.  AS a result of the report, the Board voted to increase biennial renewal fees from $50 to $100.

The PSLS Board of Directors has reviewed the report and agrees that the increase is necessary.  The public meeting date for discussion of the regulation is August 24, 2017.
