    NSPS published an interview with Legislative Affairs Consultant John Palatiello in the 3.7.13 issue of PSM Field Notes. Click here for a full transcript of the interview. In conjunction with the interview, NSPS is asking for your opinion on legislative issues. There is a brief survey posted in which you can express your interest in various issues. This is a quick and easy way to make sure your voice is heard.

    Congratulations to Karl Kriegh, PLS for being installed as the 2013 PSLS President on January 14 during the annual Surveyors’ Conference in Hershey, Pa.!

    Karl E. Kriegh, a Professional Land Surveyor in Pennsylvania since 1998, has been in the surveying field since 1983. For the past 16 years, he has worked for the City of Philadelphia, where he is currently a Surveyor and Regulator for the 7th Survey District.

    Involved with PSLS on a local level, as well as the state level, he has been a director for the Delaware Valley Chapter for the past 10 years.

    Following in the career path of his great-great grandfather, William F. Kriegh, a Land Surveyor in Clear Spring, Maryland, Karl pursued his surveying education at Tri-State College in Indiana and St. Louis Community College in Missouri.

    His first surveying position was with James Engineering in St. Louis, where he worked as a draftsmen, rodman, and instrument man, before becoming a crew chief. Later, he worked for Tony DePaul Contractors in Philadelphia, Damon Associates in Wallingford, Hunt Engineering in Malvern, and Chester Valley Engineering in Paoli.

    Karl resides in Philadelphia with his wife and three children. His hobbies are hunting, fishing and trapping, and he is an avid car collector and owner of several Pontiac GTOs.

    Richard A. Shewman, PLS, Douglassville, Pa., received the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors’ (PSLS) Surveyor of the Year Award during the annual PSLS Surveyors’ Conference in Hershey, Pa., January 13-16. The award is the Society’s highest honor.

    Rich is employed by Hunt Engineering Co., Malvern, Pa., and is the president and state director of the PSLS Delaware Valley Chapter. In addition to being active in his chapter, Rich has served as the Society’s chairman for the Bylaws Committee since 2010 and Membership Committee since 2011. Throughout the past 18 years, he has held several other leadership roles, including PSLS Delegate to the Pa. Design Association Center Executive Search Committee; Public Relations Committee member; Delaware Valley Chapter director and secretary; and, earlier in his career, Southwest Chapter director, bylaws chairman, and state director.

    In his free time, he enjoys many sports activities and traveling across North America with his family. They attended the event to share in his special evening and to show their support for his exceptional achievement.

    Congratulations to Rich for being the recipient of this outstanding award for excellence in surveying and for his contributions to the Society at the state and chapter level!
