Course Description:

Certified Professional Soil Scientists (CPSS’s) use soil survey mapping skills to interpret terrain and vegetation, in combination with high density test pit sampling, GPS locations, aerial photo interpretation, and available detailed topographic and geologic mapping.  CPSSs can produce detailed mapping for the purpose of land acquisition and efficient land development planning.

Examples to share:

Commercial land development, from hay field to office buildings and parking lots (for the natural gas industry), using decentralized sewage system and stormwater infiltration.

Residential lot planning, consideration of clustering.

How National Cooperative Soil Surveys were made- history, tools, purpose, acreage per day, Soil Orders

Web Soil Survey is the best free information available, and should not be overlooked.  However, there are scale limitations.

No resource inventory can compare to a density of 1 test pit every 50 to 100 feet by a CPSS, enhanced with 2-foot elevation contours, GPS locations, and Google Earth base maps.

Reliance on CPSS intensive mapping will

Avoid conflicts between stormwater infiltration zones and aerated absorption areas

Eliminate inefficient and unrealistic planning and engineering

Enable planner-designers to identify opportunities for clustering

Cause planners to ask whether both stormwater and sewage systems should be so “decentralized” that every small lot be required to provide soil and space for both functions.

Presenter

Laurel F. Mueller is President/Owner and Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS) for Soil Services Company, Inc, a consulting firm she started in 1984.  Laurel started Mountain Wastewater Management in 2008 to sell and service alternate technology sewage system components.

Laurel represents CPSSs at Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), and is national chair for SSSA Consultants Division.  She is a PA Sewage Enforcement Officer, a member of PASEO, a Pennsylvania Septage Management Assocation (PSMA) Instructor for Onlot Wastewater System Inspections, and a PSMA Board member.  She served on the Board of Pennsylvania Association of Professional Soil Scientists (PAPSS) and as national president of National Society of Consulting Soil Scientists (NSCSS).  Laurel has been a PSLS Associate member for more than 30 years!

Her expertise includes soil classification, high-intensity soil mapping, hydraulic conductivity, hydric soils, wetlands, stormwater, geomorphology for archaeology, expert testimony, and sewage facility  planning, designs and maintenance.

She mapped 250,000 acres of soil in Oregon with the USDA-SCS Soil Survey program, and worked as a Materials Engineering Technician for U.S. Forest Service in Missoula, Montana.

Laurel volunteers with Eldredsville Volunteer Fire Company as EMT and FireFighter-1.

Laurel has an M.S. in “Resource Conservation/ Land Capability Analysis” (1977) from University of Montana and a B.S. in “Resource Economics” (1974) from University of New Hampshire, with a focus on Land Use Planning.
